Ecole George Jay Elementary was once the largest elementary school in the province of BC. Built in 1909 on, what was then, the rural fields of a dairy farm, it is now an urban school, only blocks from downtown Victoria.
The school’s first principal was H.B. MacLean, who designed the H.B. MacLean Method of handwriting! In 2014-15, the school was seismically upgraded and many new changes have occurred inside the walls.
If you take a look outside, the school had Raven Metal Products replace the school sign, the lettering on the sign as well as recreate the original cornice work just as the architects had designed into the edges of the building. The majority of the students live in the catchment areas of Fernwood and Quadra.
